Recently (around 2014-11), after I upgrade my Chrome version to Version 39.0.2171.65 (64-bit) on my Mac, i frequently experienced a lot of lagging even crashes. Although it does not happen to all the websites, some of my “always-go” ones do get lagging / crashes, which makes me crazy!

Chrome Crashes

The issue comes from the Chrome plugin – Shockwave Flash, specifically the type of PPAPI. PPAPI stands for Pepper Plugin API, a project from Google, which aims to replace the legacy NPAPI (Netscape Plugin API) in the future. The PPAPI is designed to make plugins more portable and more secure.

Although Google plans to block all NPAPI plugins starting from 2013 (Saying Goodbye to Our Old Friend NPAPI), it will not be the case in 2014. Right now, the installation from Adobe Flash plugin still convey the NPAPI type. So normally, you will have two version both shown in the Chrome plugin list –

So, now you need to disable the PPAPI one.

  • Type chrome://plugins/ in the Chrome URL and you will see a page of all plugins.
  • Show “Details” of the plugins from the upper right corner of the page.
  • Find the one Adobe Flash Player and disable the PPAPI one.
  • Restart the Chrome.
  1. Thanks for the article, i was looking for this many time (and idk why i didnt saw this one).
But i have a doubt, in my chrome plugins just display one flash player plugin the PPAPI one, is this normal? XD
